Originally scheduled for Wednesday March 20th, this talk has been moved up one week to Wednesday March 13, 2013.
Stephen Smith of Meltwater Media will present a talk entitled "Arctic Seabirds and Climate Change Science: Arctic seabirds are revealing much about the Earth's changing oceans and climate".
International Polar Year (IPY) sponsored research on Canadian Arctic seabirds has provided insights into the impacts of industrial pollution and the role that climate change is playing in the transformation of marine ecosystems. During 2008 and 2009, Canmore-based Meltwater Media produced an award-winning documentary film that communicated some of the findings of this research. Arctic Cliffhangers is the story of both the IPY science and of the prolific seabirds that represent some of Canada’s most spectacular wildlife. Using excerpts from the film and interpreting from the field, my presentation will communicate some of the major findings from the researchers, findings that reveal how today’s vanishing sea ice is influencing marine life in Arctic waters.
