Fellows of the Arctic Institute of North America are elected in recognition of significant contributions to the knowledge of polar and/or sub-polar regions. The Institute currently has 147 Canadian Fellows, 113 American Fellows and 24 International Fellows.
The Fellows program was established in May, 1948, and by February, 1949, the Institute had elected 81 Fellows. Some of the names on that initial list of Fellows were: Rear Admiral R.E. Byrd, Dr. Diamond Jenness, Inspector Henry A. Larsen, Dr. Vilhjalmur Stefansson, Dr. J.B. Tyrrell, Dr. A.L. Washburn and Sir Hubert Wilkins. Fellows are elected for life.
The AINA Recognition Committee examines nominations of Fellows and passes them to the AINA Board of Directors for election. Anyone may nominate someone as an AINA Fellow. Please print or type the name and address of the individual you wish to nominate at the beginning of your nomination letter. List the nominee's qualifications, including the nature of their northern experience and their association with northern research, with dates, along with any additional information that you feel may be helpful to the Fellows Committee. Cite a maximum of three of the nominee's publications. Authorship of publications is not a requirement for nomination, and the nomination of people who have contributed to the communication of traditional knowledge is encouraged. Your printed or typed name and address must be included at the end of the nomination letter. If you wish to nominate more than one person, please submit separate nomination letters for each person.
